How to Create Magical Childhood Memories With Tabletop Role-Playing Games (From One Mum to Another)

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I look into the living room and realize everyone is staring at a screen.

And somewhere between school runs, washing piles, and endless scheduling I started asking myself, "What will my kids actually remember about their childhood?"

The Kind of Magic You Can’t Download

When I was growing up, magic lived in cardboard boxes that became castles and blankets that became secret caves, and laying cafes in the mud outside (no mud kitchen required). It didn’t need batteries. It needed imagination.

That’s what I wanted for my kids too. I spent the run up to maternity leave, researching at home activities for our eldest girls, but quickly becoming overwhelmed with the prep required.

That’s when we discovered tabletop role-playing games for kids. No prep. No additional equipment. Everything you need in a box (or book).

If you’ve never played one before, don’t worry. I hadn’t either.

So What Even Is a Tabletop Role-Playing Game?

In the simplest, least-intimidating mum-friendly explanation. It’s a storytelling game where your child becomes the hero. You sit around the table together. There might be some dice. There might be character cards. But mostly, there’s imagination.

Your child could be a brave knight, a forest explorer, a princess, or a wizard who accidently turns the cat purple. And instead of watching a story on a screen, they create the story.

The Night My Child Became a Hero

I quickly found we were up against limited attention spans and restless legs. So I adapted. Instead of sitting at a table, I made it portable. Cards that brought our kids into the story hidden around our home.

I watched my child problem solve, make confident decisions, work together with their teammates, and light up with the magic.

There was a moment one day when she asked ‘Can we play the Merisda game?’ Not ‘Can I play on my tablet’. That’s when I knew we’d found something special.

Why These Games Create Real Childhood Memories

Here’s what I’ve realized as a mum. Kids don’t remember perfect houses. They don’t remember clean kitchens. They don’t remember how productive we were. They remember how they felt.

When your child defeats a troll, they’re not just playing a game. They’re building confidence, learning to collaborate, and discovering that their ideas matter.
And they’re doing it with you right there beside them.

“But I’m Not a Gamer…”

Let me say this clearly. You do not need to have played Dungeons & Dragons, you do not need to memorize complicated rules, you do not need a four-hour window of uninterrupted silence (because honestly, when does that happen?).

What changed everything for me was finding beginner-friendly tabletop games designed specifically for kids. Games that are easy to set up, simple to follow, and built for shorter attention spans. Just open the box and begin.

For busy parents, that simplicity is everything.

If you’re longing for more connection. You don’t have to create Pinterest-perfect memories. You just have to sit at the table and say, “Once upon a time…”
Watch your child’s eyes light up.

That’s where the magic begins.
